As a business or website owner, one of the things that you will read everywhere when searching for information on advertising your website is that people will not visit your site if they don't know you are there. That statement is accurate. A customer or reader has to first find a website or blog before they can take advantage of any services or read what what the blogger wants to say.

The main problem with paying for advertising for a website is figuring out where to receive the "best bang for the buck." There are quite a few options for effective advertising but knowing what will work the best for the investment of time and money can be confusing and frustrating. Instead of playing the guessing game, a website owner can benefit from the experience of other website owners willing to share what they know.

Completely Free Advertising that Works

Social Media is the golden child of free advertising. Website owners always report mixed results from using social media to spread the word about what they have to offer. Some swear by it while others say it is a waste of time. Knowing how to correctly utilize and maneuver throughout the social media network is the key to a successful social media advertising campaign.

Using Facebook

Facebook is the current king of the social media giants and Facebook LOVES it when businesses and websites use their site. These type of Facebook pages are different from an individual's page because people come to the page and "like" them to keep up with what is being broadcast. Facebook has made it easy for websites and businesses to run promotions, do contests and giveaways and communicate with the audience.

Using Twitter

There is definitely mixed opinions on whether or not Twitter is an effective form of social media advertising. Ask twenty people who use the site to advertise and you will receive twenty different answers and experiences. The main worry about Twitter is getting people to follow your posts, or tweets, that will actually read them and follow through any link to the website.

Using Myspace

Myspace was once the king of social media networks. Unfortunately it has fallen in the ranks as more people became inclined to use Facebook. Don't count Myspace out just yet. There are plenty of people still using the site so it is still a great venue for advertising. Dust that old account off and remember what the password is because even a dormant account can be brought back to life to provide results.

How to Make it Work for You

There are a couple of ways to, as Captain Picard would say, "Make it so" on social media. It takes time which means it cost time but you get out of it what you put in. The quick way to acquire friends, followers and likes is to pay someone else to do it.

Anyone who chooses this option will need to make sure the company or individual they hire is willing and able to target the audience with the keywords for the website to be advertised. If the site sells dog collars then the target audience should be people who are interested in dogs.

If hiring someone is not an option, then the ground work begins. Again, it takes time to build a following and acquire friends. It is not advisable to just go through willy nilly and try to add everyone. It is counterproductive and can result in the account being terminated and the website being banned from the site. No one wants that result.

The proper way on Facebook is to suggest your page to be "liked" by other people on the network. They will look at the website's page and be able to choose whether or not they are interested. If they aren't then that's ok because they wouldn't pay any attention to the posts anyway.

The most effective way to acquire quality followers on Twitter is to search for the website niche and follow people who are interested in that niche. They will be more inclined to follow back and actually read the postings, or tweets, that are put out from the website's account.

Searching on Myspace for a specific niche is more difficult. Searches can be done by sex, race, marital status, etc. but a niche search proves to be more difficult. If there is an account already set up but inactive, the posts can be broadcast from that account and people will start to show interest by soliciting friend requests to the page.

Post Everywhere at Once

There are free programs such as Tweet Deck that will make it possible to post on all of the social media sites at once. These programs save time by storing log in information for each account and making it possible to simultaneously post on all time lines at the same time. Anything to save time when using social media for advertising is a good thing!

Free and Cheap Advertising that Works

Not everyone likes social media for advertising their website. This is understandable because everyone is different and has different needs. So what other options are available?

Cheap Advertising that Provides Results

There are websites that are specifically geared toward advertising and information. These sites advertise themselves in ways that attract websites and individuals to their site. Individuals that are looking for a specific product, service or just something interesting to them will go to one of the individual sites to search for what they want to know. The websites advertised on the site reap the benefits of being found.

Good advertising sites are well aware of the importance of ranking in the search engines. If the advertising site has acquired a ranking in Google then chances are if someone is looking for a dog collar, the site that contains the ad for a website that sells dog collars will appear on the results page much higher than the website itself will. That is why it is important to pick the sites to advertise on carefully.

Another consideration is the cost for the return. A site can charge anything they want to place a banner, link or information on but if there is no return with traffic, then it is better to light the money on fire and use it to keep warm in the winter time. Results matter just as much if not even more than the cost.

Free Advertising

Free advertising isn't always what it is cracked up to be. Yes, it may give a useful backlink to the website but depending on where the advertisement is, it can also do more harm than good.

Commenting on blogs that have a ranking in Google is one way to acquire free advertising and a backlink to the website if done correctly. It is not advisable to overly promote and comments should only be left if it is relevant to the post. Anything else is considered spam and no one likes spam!

Online classified ads are a good source for free advertising. As long as the ads are placed in the proper category, informative and descriptive with a link to the website. Classified ads are becoming more popular as people move away from hard copy newspapers and magazines opting instead for the online versions. Advertising on online classified ad sites also creates another backlink that may help in the webpage ranking.

The Ultimate Goal

The ultimate goal in when advertising a website or business is to acquire hits that result in sales or readers. It doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg to be successful and provide results. Hopefully some of the suggestions that have been presented here will spark a new idea or lead in the right direction.
